Green Living Center Celebrates Grand Opening
No Longer a Green Dream, Florida's Big Bend Welcomes New Eco-friendly Resource
October 15, 2007
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The vision became a reality Sunday as representatives from Sustainable Big Bend (SBB) were joined by more than 200 community supporters at the opening of the highly anticipated Green Living Center (GLC). The Center is officially open for business today, thanks to the help and hard work of lenders, donors and volunteers. The open house celebration allowed environmental enthusiasts and an interested public to discover all the location has to offer.
Located at 1020 N. Monroe St., the GLC is the first of its kind in the Tallahassee area, serving as a central, permanent place to showcase 'green' services and products in a storefront setting. The idea of the GLC arose after the success of the Big Bend Green Living and Energy Expo in March 2007, when SBB recognized the demand for a location where people could continuously learn and exchange ideas about sustainability.
Florida's Big Bend visitors toured the facility, networked, and browsed The Green Store's goods, including fair trade coffee, scarves, purses, lead-free pottery and bamboo products - just in time for holiday shopping. Other GLC features include an environmental reading room and coffee shop, as well as green builder / product vendor displays, and green club information.
During one of the event's highlights, participants from the ongoing FSU Campus & Community Sustainability Conference joined attendees for a Big Bend 'green community' photo, marking a moment in history for supporters of these environmental efforts.
In order to further education, the GLC will show independent films on related subjects, and includes a media area in which individuals can read and check out publications as well as surf the Web.
Groups will be able to rent a portion of the GLC for meetings, events and activities. It will also become a pickup point for the Local Food Network, giving citizens access to fresh organic food while supporting local farms.
